Does Medicare Cover Second Opinions for Surgical Procedures?

Second opinions, when another doctor's view is sought in relation to the treatment of your health problem, are covered by Medicare. If you feel a second opinion is needed, please do not hesitate to seek one. Medicare will also pay for third opinions if the first and second opinions are different.

How Much Do You Pay?

You pay for 20% of the Medicare-approved amount. You pay nothing for second and third opinions or for an Ambulatory Surgical procedure done in a hospital outpatient department.

You must pay your deductible for any Medicare Part B services and supplies before Medicare begins to pay its share. If a doctor, health care provider or supplier does not accept assignment, the amount you pay may be higher.
