What is the Medicare Annual Election Period (AEP)?

Medicare’s Annual Election Period (AEP) is the time of year in which you can join, switch or drop Medicare plans. The Annual Election Period period begins this year begins November 15 and ends on December 31, 2010. (There are a few conditions that will allow you to enroll in a plan prior to November 15. If you are eligible, you will have received information in the mail outlining your Special Enrollment Period.)

In 2011, and subsequent years, this Annual Election Period will be October 15 through December 7.

If I enroll during this time, when does my coverage begin?

If you enroll between November 15 and December 31, 2010, your Medicare coverage will begin January 1 and will continue for the entire year.

Is there any other enrollment time?

You may enroll in a Medicare health plan or Part D plan when you first become eligible for Medicare during the Annual Election Period and during Special Enrollment Periods.

What if I have been dropped from my employer retiree plan?

For years, many retirees did not have to enroll in an individual Medicare plan, as employers have provided health benefits to their retirees. However, each year millions of older Americans are dropped from their employer retiree health plans, and now must enroll in an individual Medicare plan. If you have been dropped from your employer retiree plan, Medicare gives you additional time to select a new Medicare plan. See “Employer and Group Retiree Guide to Part D Coverage” for more detailed information.

What if I have been dropped from a Medicare Advantage Private Fee-For-Service (PFFS)?

Many insurance companies that offer PFFS plans have decided to cancel their Medicare PFFS insurance coverage. This means that many Medicare beneficiaries that are currently enrolled in Medicare PFFS plans will need to change their plan by enrolling in a new Medicare plan during the Annual Election Period or during a Special Enrollment Period. You may enroll in another plan with that same company or choose a plan from one of the other companies in your area. If your plan has been dropped, Medicare gives you additional time to select a new Medicare plan.
