In January 2011, Medicare began phasing in a new Competitive Bidding Program in some parts of the country. The program requires providers and suppliers of certain durable medical equipment, prosthetics, orthotics, and supplies (DMEPOS) to submit bids for their products. If you have Original Medicare and live in (or travel to) an area included in the program, you will almost always have to use a Medicare contract supplier for DMEPOS products and services.
Round 1 Competitive Bid Areas
The first phase of the program, called Round 1, currently applies to people with Original Medicare who live in or travel to the following Competitive Bid Areas:
- Charlotte, Gastonia, Concord (North Carolina and South Carolina)
- Cincinnati, Middletown (Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana)
- Cleveland, Elyria, Mentor (Ohio)
- Dallas, Forth Worth, Arlington (Texas)
- Kansas City (Missouri and Kansas)
- Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Pompano Beach (Florida)
- Orlando, Kissimmee (Florida)
- Pittsburgh (Pennsylvania)
- Riverside, San Bernardino, Ontario (California)
Round 2 Competitive Bid Areas
Starting July 2013, the program will be expanded to include the following 91 Competitive Bid Areas in Round 2:

- Boise City-Nampa, ID
- Colorado Springs, CO
- Denver-Aurora, CO
